Duration: 11 hours. 1 hour walk (round trip) to approach the Turquoise Lagoon.

Places: Salar de Maricunga, Copiapó Volcano and Salar de Pedernales

Nestled in the middle of the Domeyko and Claudio Gay mountain ranges, 3,346 meters above sea level and about 237 km from the city of Copiapó. It corresponds to a vast extension of salt flats located in a depression between mountains, forming lagoons with turquoise blue waters on its inner margins. In the sector, fauna such as Andean, Chilean and James flamingos and Juarjual ducks inhabit. It is characterized by being surrounded by hills where remains of marine fossils have been found, including the Doña Inés Volcano, Los Gemelos and Blanco. Activities such as excursions, photography, observation of flora and fauna and adventure tourism can be carried out.

SALAR DE MARICUNGA

The Maricunga salt flat is located 160 kilometers northeast of Copiapó, on the way to the San Francisco border crossing.

It is located at an altitude of 3756 meters above sea level and covers an area of ​​approximately 80 km². It is the southernmost salt flat in Chile.

It originated in a closed basin product of the crossing or knot of the Claudio Gay and Domeyko mountain ranges. When the water evaporated, the salt was concentrated as it had no outlet to the sea.

VOLCANO COPIAPÓ

The Copiapó Volcano is 6080 meters above sea level, it is an imposing massif that was used as a shrine by the Inca culture, standing as one of the sacred mountains within the Inca culture.

The archaeological finds have allowed Copiapó to acquire a certain fame within the local mountaineers due to its direct access since vestiges of the Inca culture have been found at its summit and surroundings, such as a tiled ceremonial platform, as well as silver statuettes with shapes. feathers and accessories made of feathers
